Mould, Hart share stage to raise money for Soul Asylum bassist
The estranged songwriters of Husker Du reunited onstage Thursday in Minneapolis as part of a benefit for Soul Asylum bassist Karl Mueller, who was diagnosed with throat cancer last spring. Bob Mould and Grant Hart played a pair of Husker Du songs, "Hardly Getting Over It" and -- ironically enough -- "Never Talking to You Again" in their first performance together in sixteen years.
Hart joked about the improbable nature of the reunion, with an eye towards next week's presidential election. "If me and Bob can get together, that means we can all get together and put [President] Bush out of office, right?" he said from the stage.
Other performers at the Quest club included Soul Asylum, Paul Westerberg, a reunited Gear Daddies and an ad-hoc lineup of self-described "stupor group" Golden Smog.
In 1988 Husker Du had an acrimonious breakup over songwriting credits and the band's musical direction, shortly after they made the jump from an indie label to Warner Bros., with drummer Hart and guitarist Mould rarely speaking and taking shots at each other in the press over the years. Bassist Greg Norton now runs a restaurant outside of Minneapolis, but did not participate in the reunion.
"Thursday night's show was a total success, at least $50K was raised for Karl Mueller," posted Mould on his Web site. "It was a bit of an old home night, lots of familiar faces, and some serious blasts from the past . . . It was all about Karl, the good cause, and thanks to everyone who plunked down the cash for tickets -- I hope you all got your money's worth."

If Soul Asylum was banished from playing their "radio songs" or even better, their last 3 CDs, this would be a WONDERFUL show to see!!!
Man oh MAN, I wish Bob and Grant would let bygones be bygones so I could see them play together again!

Which are the last three? I stopped paying attention with the release of Grave Dancers Union, which was complete shit. IMO, and I believe most people's, Horse They Rode In On was the last one worth a damn. IMO, it is also their finest hour. Damn near a perfect album. I know all of my friends liked Hang Time the most. I give it to them that "Sometime To Return" is easily on my 10 greatest songs ever written list, but that and "Cartoon" are the two shimmering tracks, and the rest are just really good.

Hang Time was also my favorite Soul Asylum album, and they played a show at Metro to support that disc that is still one of the BEST shows I've ever seen! They were sloppy brilliance that night, and it was like 120 degrees inside Metro.
Speaking of Metro, didja see that Butch Walker tickets go on sale tomorrow for his December 12th show there? I WILL be there!!

I was talking about Soul Asylum. I would love to see a Husker reunion. Damm MAD at myself for missing a show here in Lawrence on there last tour. My greatest moment was seeing Dave Pirner(sp) motion for a smoke and some roadie had it lit and just gave it to him.

Cuz the show on 12/12 is a headlining gig with American HiFi and Val Emmich supporting. 14 bucks is also not a bad price at all.
I'm not really interested in seeing Avril Lavigne or paying "Avril money" to see a support set by Butch, so I'm happy that the Dec. 12th show is happening.
